6.2.2. System of self-diagnostics (OBD) and codes

GENERAL INFORMATION

Digital voltmeter

The digital voltmeter is used for diagnostics of system of reduction of toxicity of exhaust gases and management of operation of the engine.

Scanner

The scanner is used for definition of codes of malfunction and the analysis of control systems of the engine.

Prevention

On models from 1990 to 1994 the system of self-diagnostics of OBD1, and since 1995 – system of self-diagnostics of OBD2 is installed.


For definition of codes of malfunction in OBD1 system it is necessary to disunite simply the test socket located under the dashboard. But definition of codes of malfunctions in OBD2 system requires use of the special device for viewing of codes of malfunctions. For carrying out diagnostics of system of reduction of toxicity of exhaust gases and management of operation of the engine it is desirable to use the digital voltmeter which has high entrance resistance and does not influence work of the checked chain (see rice. Digital voltmeter).

For definition of codes of malfunctions and the analysis of control systems of the engine it is necessary to use special scanners (see rice. Scanner).

The ECM block contains the built-in system of self-diagnostics which finds and classifies malfunctions in electric chains. When the ECM module finds malfunction, the control lamp of "check engine" lights up, malfunction is identified, and the code of malfunction registers in memory and remains in it.

There are four ways of self-diagnostics of malfunction of the engine. The control lamp of "check engine" lights up if there is a malfunction in U-way.

The U-way is user-friendliest.

Way of reading memory. It is intended for department of maintenance for check of the reserved codes of malfunctions.

D-way. It is used for check of faulty parts.

Way of cleaning. It is intended for removal of the written-down malfunction codes.

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Check that the test socket of a way of malfunction is disconnected.
2. Include ignition, without starting the engine and check that the lamp of "check engine" on a combination of devices burns.
3. Watch a bulb of "check engine" which will highlight the malfunction codes which are written down in memory of the computer. In the absence of malfunction codes the lamp of "check engine" will not burn. If the lamp of "check engine" flickers, it means that the test socket of a way of malfunction is not disconnected.
4. Watching a lamp of "check engine", define malfunction codes. The first figure of a code of malfunction is highlighted by long flashes, and the second figure of a code of malfunction is highlighted by short flashes. For example, 4 long flashes represent figure 4, and two short flashes represent figure 2, that is a code of malfunction 42.
