2.42. Check and adjustment of gaps of valves

GENERAL INFORMATION

Prevention

Check of gaps of valves needs to be made on the cold engine.

ENGINES 1,8, 2,0 AND 2,2 L

Installation of the piston of the first cylinder in VMT

At installation of the piston of the first cylinder in VMT in a compression step the tag on a pulley of the right camshaft has to coincide with the index.

Check of a gap of valves probe edge

Adjustment of a valvate gap

Arrangement of arrows on a camshaft pulley
Shooters on a pulley of a camshaft specify position of the corresponding piston in VMT.

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Remove assembly of the air filter and disconnect the sensor of mass of a stream of air (MAF).
2. Uncover heads of the block of cylinders. Then, using adjusting tags, install the piston of the first cylinder in the top dead point in a compression step (see rice. Installation of the piston of the first cylinder in VMT).
3. Using a probe edge, measure gaps of valves and write down their values (see rice. Check of a gap of valves probe edge).
4. If adjustment of a valvate gap is necessary, weaken a lock-nut and, rotating the adjusting screw of the valve, establish the demanded gap (see rice. Adjustment of a valvate gap).
5. After adjustment of a valvate gap hold the adjusting screw with a screw-driver and tighten a lock-nut.
6. Adjust valvate gaps in other cylinders in the following sequence: 3–2–4. Before adjustment of valvate gaps install the piston in the corresponding cylinder in VMT in a compression step for what turn a cranked shaft on 180 ° clockwise. To be convinced that the piston of the corresponding cylinder is in VMT, check the provision of an arrow on a camshaft pulley (see rice. An arrangement of arrows on a camshaft pulley).
7. Establish a cover of a head of the block of cylinders and fix bolts.

ENGINES OF 2,5 L

Arrangement of tags on a camshaft pulley

When checking a valvate gap of the inlet valve No. 1 and final valve No. 3 it is necessary to establish tags in the specified situation.

Use of the probe for measurement of a valvate gap

Arrangement of pulleys of camshafts

When checking gaps inlet the valve No. 3 and the final valve No. 2 nebkhodimo to establish pulleys of camshafts in the specified situation.

Arrangement of pulleys of camshafts

At adjustment of gaps of valves of the inlet valve No. 2 and final valve No. 4 nebkhodimo to establish pulleys of camshafts in the specified situation.

Arrangement of pulleys of camshafts

At adjustment of a valvate gap of the inlet valve No. 4 and final valve No. 1 nebkhodimo to establish pulleys of camshafts in the specified situation.

Prevention

Adjustment of valvate gaps requires use of special tools for pressing of a pusher of the valve.

Check and adjustment of valvate gaps need to be made on the cold engine (20–40 °C).

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Uncover heads of the block of cylinders.
2. Remove a casing of a gear belt from the right camshafts.
3. Turn a pulley of a cranked shaft clockwise until the tag on a pulley of a camshaft is established in the provision of an hour hand 2 hours 30 minutes (see rice. An arrangement of tags on a camshaft pulley). Measure a valvate gap of the inlet valve No. 1 and final valve No. 3.
4. Using a probe edge, measure a valvate gap of the inlet valve No. 1 and final valve No. 3 (see rice. Use of the probe for measurement of a valvate gap). Write down the measured gaps of valves.
5. Turn a cranked shaft clockwise until adjusting tags on a pulley of a camshaft are not established in the provision of an hour hand 4 hours 30 minutes (see rice. Arrangement of pulleys of camshafts). Measure valvate gaps of the final valve No. 2 and inlet valve No. 3.
6. Turn a cranked shaft of the engine until adjusting tags on a pulley of a camshaft are not established in the provision of an hour hand of 7 hours 30 minutes (see rice. Arrangement of pulleys of camshafts). Measure a gap of the inlet valve No. 2 and final valve No. 4.
7. Turn a cranked shaft clockwise until adjusting tags on a pulley of a camshaft are not established in the provision of an hour hand of 10 hours 30 minutes (see rice. Arrangement of pulleys of camshafts). Measure a gap of valves of the final valve No. 1 and inlet valve No. 4.
8. If gaps of valves differ from demanded, it is necessary to replace an adjusting washer with a washer of the demanded thickness.
9. Turn a valve pusher so that cut in a pusher was established at an angle 45 ° in relation to a camshaft.
10. For pressing of a pusher of the valve on the engine of 2,5 l use the special adaptation.
11. Establish the holder of the special tool on a camshaft
12. Establish a depressor on the holder of the special adaptation and fix it a hinged finger.
13. Establish a hinged finger in a depressor and the holder.
14. Turn a hinged finger to press a valve pusher.
15. After pressing of a pusher of the valve, take an adjusting washer, using a small screw-driver or tweezers.
16. Measure thickness of an adjusting washer. For calculation of thickness of a new adjusting washer use the following formula:
The inlet valve S = (V + T) – 0.2 mm.
The final valve S = (V + T) – 0.25 mm.
T = thickness of an old adjusting washer;
V = the measured valvate gap;
S = thickness of a new adjusting washer.
17. Choose a new adjusting washer with thickness, the closest to settlement. Use an adjusting washer with thickness from 2,22 mm to 2,82 mm with a step of 0,01 mm.
18. Using the special tool, press a pusher of the valve and establish a new adjusting washer.
19. Repeat procedure for a choice and replacement of adjusting washers on other valves.
